About Anderson Mills East
Anderson Mill is an established residential community in northwest Austin, split by US-183 (Research Boulevard). Anderson Mills East refers to the Austin-side portion of the community, situated in Williamson County and served by Round Rock ISD. A separate Anderson Mill West exists in Cedar Park under Leander ISD.
The broader Anderson Mill community was organized as Williamson County Municipal Utility District Number 1 in 1973 (renamed Anderson Mill Municipal Utility District in 1988). First homes were built in 1975, with construction continuing through 1985, resulting in approximately 3,400 homes across the community. The community was annexed by the City of Austin on December 31, 2008, under a Strategic Partnership Agreement originally signed in 1998. The MUD was converted to the Anderson Mill Limited District, ratified by voters on May 9, 2009, which retains control of parks and recreation while Austin provides water and wastewater services.
The community is named after Thomas Anderson, who migrated from Virginia in the late 1850s and built a gunpowder mill for the Confederacy on Cypress Creek in the early 1860s. After the Civil War, he converted it to a gristmill; a cotton gin was added in the 1870s. The original mill site is now beneath Lake Travis, submerged by Mansfield Dam construction in 1941. A replica working mill and museum exist at a nearby historical site, offering demonstrations and exhibits.
Homes typically range from 1,300 to 2,500 square feet, mostly single-story ranch and two-story traditional designs in light-washed brick, on lots of one-eighth to one-third of an acre. Anderson Mill Estates, a subsection, features larger lots of 0.7 to 3.3 acres. The neighborhood has undergone a wave of recent remodels updating interiors with modern finishes while retaining the established tree canopy and mature landscaping.
