About Round Mountain
Round Mountain is a small incorporated community of 101 residents (2020 census) in northern Blanco County, at the junction of U.S. Highway 281 and Farm Road 962 on the eastern edge of the Edwards Plateau. The community covers 2.31 square miles at an elevation of 1,263 feet, situated in the rolling limestone and live oak terrain of the Texas Hill Country.
The community was originally called Birdtown after its first settler, Joseph Bird, who arrived in 1854 and built a log house near a creek. When a post office was established in 1857 — the second post office in Blanco County — the name changed to Round Mountain, taken from a nearby rounded hilltop that rises to 1,595 feet above sea level, approximately two miles northwest of the settlement. Round Mountain served as a stage stop on the mail route between Austin and Fredericksburg. An academy chartered in 1871 at one point enrolled 200 students. The Stagecoach Inn and Stable, built in 1874, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Round Mountain was formally incorporated in 1989. The local school consolidated into Johnson City ISD in 1931. The community is about 10 miles north of Johnson City (the Blanco County seat) and about 50 miles from Austin. Ranching remains the primary economic activity in the surrounding area, though the broader Hill Country wine tourism corridor along U.S. 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg draws visitors through the region.
