About Gruene
Gruene (pronounced "Green") is a historic district and riverside community on the north side of New Braunfels, along the Guadalupe River in Comal County. Once an independent settlement, it is now within the New Braunfels city limits, about three miles north of downtown. German farmers settled the area in the 1850s, and in 1872 the Gruene family acquired several thousand acres north of the Guadalupe, building a cotton operation that made Gruene a banking, ginning, and shipping center for area growers by 1900.
The community declined after the boll weevil devastated area cotton in the 1920s and the Great Depression closed its businesses, and its population fell to around 75 by the 1930s. Beginning in the 1970s, Gruene was revived as an arts, crafts, and tourism destination, and the Gruene Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Much of its 19th-century townscape survives, giving Gruene a distinct historic character within New Braunfels.
At the heart of the district is Gruene Hall, built in 1878 and billed by the venue as Texas's oldest continually operating dance hall. Other landmarks include the Gruene Mansion Inn, built as the Gruene family home in 1872 and now an inn; the Gristmill River Restaurant, set in the ruins of the old cotton gin; the Gruene General Store; and the district's early-20th-century water tower overlooking the Guadalupe.
Today Gruene is a tourism and hospitality hub for New Braunfels, drawing visitors for live music, Guadalupe River tubing, dining, and shopping. Public education in the Gruene area is provided by New Braunfels Independent School District or Comal Independent School District depending on the specific address, reflecting the district boundaries that run through northern New Braunfels.
