Montopolis is a historic neighborhood in East Austin, Texas, located in Travis County within the 78741 zip code. The neighborhood is bounded by Lady Bird Lake on the north, Grove Street and the Pleasant Valley neighborhood on the west, Texas State Highway 71 on the south, and U.S. Route 183 on the east. The area's history predates the founding of Austin itself. Jesse Cornelius Tannehill established the original Montopolis townsite in 1839 on a 4,428-acre headright along the north bank of the Colorado River, platting 800 acres for a planned town. The Montopolis ford served as one of the main crossings of the Colorado River for the Chisholm Trail cattle drives from approximately 1867 to 1884. Indigenous peoples lived in and traveled through the area for thousands of years before European arrival, and El Camino Real de los Tejas, established by the Spanish along Native American trails, passed along the eastern edge of what is now the Montopolis neighborhood.
