Jesse Cornelius Tannehill established the original Montopolis townsite in 1839 on a 4,428-acre headright along the north bank of the Colorado River, platting 800 acres for a planned town. The Montopolis ford served as one of the main crossings of the Colorado River for the Chisholm Trail cattle drives from approximately 1867 to 1884.
