Pilot Knob is a rapidly developing area in southeast Travis County near the intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and Farm-to-Market Road 812, approximately eight miles southeast of downtown Austin. The neighborhood is adjacent to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and McKinney Falls State Park.
The area is named for Pilot Knob, the eroded core of an extinct submarine volcano active approximately 79 to 83 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. The volcanic complex covers an area two miles in diameter, consisting of four small rounded hills of erosion-resistant mafic trap rock rising above a circular lowland drained by Cottonmouth Creek. Pilot Knob is one of approximately 75 late-Cretaceous volcanic remnants scattered across Central Texas. The geological formation sits on private property.
The Pilot Knob area is undergoing substantial residential development. Easton Park, a 2,214-acre master-planned community developed by Brookfield Residential, is the area's largest new development. The project was approved as a Planned Unit Development (PUD) in 2012 and at buildout is planned to include approximately 14,300 residential units and 5.35 million square feet of commercial space, with 360 acres of parks, recreation space, and 13.1 miles of trails. The PUD includes 1,000 homes reserved for households earning less than 80 percent of Austin's median family income and 350 rental units for those under 60 percent.
Before the current development, the area was semi-rural with residences on large lots, scattered small businesses, and a few churches.
Pilot Knob is served by Del Valle Independent School District (Del Valle ISD), which joined the community in 1956. Schools serving the area include Newton Collins Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, John P. Ojeda Junior High, and Del Valle High School. Del Valle ISD has workforce development partnerships with employers in the southeast Austin corridor.
The drive to downtown Austin is approximately eight miles via US-183 or SH-71, typically taking 15 to 25 minutes. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is within a few minutes' drive. Tesla's Gigafactory Texas, a vehicle assembly plant on a 2,100-acre site off SH-130, is in the broader southeast Travis County corridor.
McKinney Falls State Park, a 744-acre state park at the confluence of Onion Creek and Williamson Creek, offers hiking trails, swimming, camping, and picnicking. The park is adjacent to the Pilot Knob area and provides access to two named waterfalls. The developing Easton Park community is adding retail, dining, and amenity space as phases are completed.
Shopping and services are available along US-183 and near the SH-71 corridor. The Southeast Austin corridor is one of the metro's most active growth areas, with new housing, retail, and commercial development following the airport and Tesla expansions.
