The community takes its name from Juan Martín de Veramendi, an early Texas political figure who served as the first alcalde of San Antonio and later as governor of Coahuila y Tejas; his 1831 land grant underlies the Comal tract on which New Braunfels was founded in 1845. That history is reflected in the preserved ranch land and open space woven through the development.
