Lake Travis Independent School District covers approximately 118 square miles of western Travis County and serves the cities of Lakeway, Bee Cave, The Hills, and Briarcliff (all incorporated), the Hudson Bend census-designated place, and surrounding unincorporated Hill Country territory. The district is bounded by the Travis/Hays county line to the south, Lake Travis to the north, the Pedernales River to the west, and Lake Austin and Barton Creek to the east. LTISD was formed on June 12, 1981, when the area split from Dripping Springs ISD; district administration is at 3324 Ranch Road 620 South in Austin (78738), co-located with Lake Travis High School.
The district enrolls approximately 11,272 students across 11 campuses: seven elementary schools (Bee Cave, Lake Pointe, Lake Travis, Lakeway, Rough Hollow, Serene Hills, and West Cypress Hills), three middle schools (Bee Cave, Hudson Bend, and Lake Travis), and one high school (Lake Travis). LTISD earned an "A" overall accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency for the 2024-2025 school year, scoring 90 of 100; seven of the eleven campuses earned individual A ratings and four earned B's. The 2023-2024 district rating was a B at 89 of 100.
Lake Travis High School competes in UIL Class 6A and is the most recognized program in the district. The Cavaliers football team has won six UIL state football championships — five consecutive 4A titles in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 (the first program in Texas to win five straight at any level), then a 6A title in 2016. Other recent UIL titles include boys soccer (2022), boys golf (2024 in 6A), girls golf (2013, 2015-2017), sailing (2018, 2019, 2022), rugby (2013), and girls volleyball (2010, 2011). The high school offers 25 AP courses, roughly 30 Pre-AP and Honors courses, and six Institutes of Study (specialized academic pathways). Notable alumni include NFL quarterbacks Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns / Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Garrett Gilbert, NFL kicker Cameron Dicker, NFL wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and MLB infielder Brett Baty.
Topographically the district is hilly Texas Hill Country with limestone outcroppings and frontage along the south shore of Lake Travis. Ranch to Market Road 620 (RR 620) is the primary north-south route through Lakeway and Bee Cave; State Highway 71 forms the southern district line and serves as the principal east-west route. The Hill Country Galleria — a 1.3-million-square-foot open-air shopping and dining center anchored by Whole Foods Market, Dillard's, Barnes & Noble, Dick's Sporting Goods, and a 14-screen Cinemark theater — sits at Highway 71 and the southern district line in Bee Cave. Lake Travis itself is a Colorado River reservoir that defines the district's northern boundary; public lake access points include Mansfield Dam Park (City of Austin) and the much larger Pace Bend Park (Travis County, 1,368 acres along nine miles of Lake Travis shoreline).
LTISD's two largest incorporated cities anchor most of the district's residential development. Lakeway had a 2020 Census population of 19,189 and operates its own police department, parks, and municipal staff from City Hall at 1102 Lohmans Crossing Road. Bee Cave had a 2020 Census population of 9,144 and operates municipal services from City Hall at 4000 Galleria Parkway. The Hills (2,613 residents) and Briarcliff (2,074 residents) are smaller incorporated cities, and Hudson Bend is a census-designated place along the lake.
Housing inside the district is overwhelmingly single-family. The lakefront and lake-view communities along the south shore of Lake Travis (Lakeway, Hudson Bend, Briarcliff) include parcels with deeded shoreline access or community boat-ramp rights. Inland communities like Spanish Oaks, Falconhead, Rough Hollow, Flintrock Falls, and West Cypress Hills are master-planned developments with HOA-governed amenities. The district contains The Hills of Lakeway and Flintrock Falls golf-course communities, anchored around The Hills Country Club's 72 holes across four courses — including a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design (the Hills) and a Nicklaus father-son co-design (Flintrock Falls) — plus the Live Oak and Yaupon courses.
Day-to-day retail centers on the Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave, the Lakeway Commons / Lake Travis Shopping Center on RR 620, and the smaller Lakeway City Center area along Lohmans Crossing. Healthcare access includes the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Lakeway hospital at 100 Medical Parkway. RR 620 connects north to FM 2222 and Loop 360 for downtown Austin access; Highway 71 connects east to MoPac and Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Highway). The Hamilton Greenbelt in Lakeway provides a short-loop hiking system, while Pace Bend Park, Mansfield Dam Park, and the Travis County-managed Hippie Hollow (the only legally clothing-optional public park in Texas) all offer Lake Travis access from inside the district.
