The city of Lakeway was developed beginning in the early 1960s on a 2,700-acre ranch that had belonged to Houston oilman Jack (Jake) Josey. A group of Houston investors opened the Lakeway Inn and Marina in July 1963 and laid out a residential community around it. Property owners voted to incorporate in July 1974, creating the roughly 1,200-acre village of Lakeway. The Yaupon course, designed by golf architect Leon Howard, is an 18-hole, par-72 layout; together with the neighboring Live Oak course it forms the 36-hole Clubs of Lakeway.
